Direct Academy Reports: Head of Coaching, Head of Recruitment, Head of Sports Science & Medicine, Head of Education & Child Welfare, Head of Intermediate Academy, Head of Junior Academy

Hours of work: Full Time including evenings and weekends          Salary: Commensurate with senior position

Motherwell Football Club is seeking an Academy Director to oversee the operations and management of the club’s Elite level Academy.


The Academy Director will be responsible for the delivery of the academy's coaching programme throughout the three phases of the academy including the progression and development of all coaches within the academy.

Working from our Braidhurst campus, the Academy Director will be managing the programme and future development of the academy, players and its staff.

This is a vitally important role within the club as a fundamental part of our strategy is to promote players from the local area and develop them within our environment, ultimately to play for our first-team.

The new appointment will be responsible for managing the full and part time staff within the club’s academy staffing structure and have responsibility for guiding the ongoing philosophy.


Duties of the role will include: 

1. Player Recruitment
  • Management of Head of Recruitment
  • Create and maintain a detailed pathway for all academy players
  • Ensure good communication between squads and recruiters
  • Ensure co-ordinated player exit policy is in place for all age groups


2. Facility Provision
  • Responsible for ensuring that the academy has confirmed access agreements in place for all coaching and sports science sessions and the playing of matches in line with SFA Club Academy Scotland criteria.


3. Coaching
  • Recruitment and management of all academy coaching staff.
  • Ensure that all coaches undergo regular coach education and that they comply with SFA Club Academy Scotland coach qualification criteria.
  • Design and implement a detailed coaching syllabus for all age groups and coaches and ensure implementation by coaching staff.
  • Arrange regular coach in service days.
  • Carry out regular coach assessment to ensure all academy coaches deliver to the highest possible standards.
  • Ensure that all squads are fully facilitated with coaching equipment.


4. Sports Science
  • Responsible for ensuring that sports science provision complies fully with SFA Club Academy Scotland criteria.
  • Ensure good communication between squad coaches and sports science delivery staff


5. Medical Provision
  • Responsible for ensuring that medical provision complies fully with SFA Club Academy Scotland criteria.
  • Ensure that all squad coaches undergo basic sports first aid training.
  • Ensure that all squads are provided with a sports first aid bag and that it is fully stocked and taken to games.
  • Ensure good communication between squad coaches and club medical staff.


6. Education and Welfare
  • Management of Education and Welfare Officer
  • Ensure that resources are available to support all academy players who require education support.
  • Ensure good relationships with local schools and other education providers.
  • Responsible for ensuring the welfare of all academy players is provided for.
  • Ensure good communication between squad coaches and Education and Welfare Officer.


7. Academy Administration
  • Responsible for the successful completion of the SFA Youth Audit
  • Ensure that all child protection procedures are fully complied with and accurate records are kept of all disclosure information.
  • Ensure that all academy matches home and away are fully facilitated.
  • Ensure that all academy staff are issued with a code of conduct and that they adhere to the high standards required.


Additional Duties

  • Responsible for ensuring that the academy operates within the agreed annual budget.
  • Regular parent liaison, including meetings and the issuing of Parent Code of Conduct.
  • Regular discussion with Development Team Manager to ensure academy transition to 1st Team.
  • Regular discussion with Community Trust General Manager to ensure delivery of the player pathway from age 7-10.
  • Represent Club at SPL/SFA academy/youth meetings.


Minimum requirements to apply for the role:

The Academy Director must hold one of the following Scottish FA recognised qualifications:

  • UEFA Pro Licence (Ideal)
  • UEFA Elite Youth A Licence
  • UEFA A Licence

In addition, we would expect the Academy Director to have a full driving licence.
